What is Gingivitis?
You might have heard of gingivitis, but do you truly understand what it means for oral health?
This blog aims to explain gingivitis, its causes and symptoms, and how to manage and prevent it effectively.
By the end, you’ll be equipped with the knowledge to protect your gums and teeth from this common yet preventable condition.
Dr Ken Chan and My Local Dentists Seven Hills team have compiled this comprehensive guide to help you maintain optimal oral health.
Facts from the 2018 National Oral Health Report
- Prevalence of Periodontal Pockets: 19.8% of adults over 15 have periodontal pockets more significant than 4mm wide. If ignored, the pockets between your teeth and gums can harbour germs and plaque, resulting in gum disease.
- Brushing Habits: Half of Australian adults do not brush their teeth twice daily as recommended, allowing plaque and tooth decay to progress significantly within 24 hours.
- Childhood Oral Health: Over 22,000 Australian children under 9 were hospitalised for oral health problems, all of which were preventable with proper oral care and access to dental services via the Children’s Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS).
- Gum Disease in Adults: About 20% of the population suffers from gum disease, with rates nearing 50% in those over 65. Gingivitis is the initial stage of this periodontal disease.
Given its critical role in overall health, it is imperative to comprehend the significance of oral health. Preventing gingivitis is essential for maintaining a healthy mouth and body.
What is Gingivitis?
Gingivitis has two parts: “gingiva,” which means gums, and “itis,” which means inflammation.
Thus, gingivitis refers to gum inflammation. It is an early and treatable form of periodontal disease.
If ignored, it can escalate into severe inflammation and infection, affecting the gums, teeth, and periodontal ligaments, potentially leading to tooth loss.
Gingivitis vs. Periodontitis
It is crucial to differentiate between gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis, unlike periodontitis, does not cause permanent damage to the gums and bones.
However, untreated gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, which results in irreversible damage.
The Role of Plaque in Gingivitis
Plaque buildup, a mixture of saliva and food particles, is the main culprit in gingivitis. It gets trapped along the gumline and between teeth.
If not removed, it hardens into tartar, leading to bleeding, sensitive, infected, and inflamed gums.
Untreated, this condition progresses to periodontitis, causing receding gums, sensitive teeth, and loose teeth.
Signs and Symptoms of Gingivitis
Gum disease is often painless, making it critical to detect the following symptoms:
- Swollen, red, or tender gums
- Sensitive teeth
- Gums that bleed during brushing or flossing
- Constant plaque buildup along the gums
- Receding gums
- Chronic bad breath
- Loose teeth
- Changes in bite or partial denture fit
- Pus around teeth and gums
Common Causes and Risk Factors
Preventing gingivitis can be aided by knowledge of the causes and risk factors:
- Inadequate brushing and flossing
- Smoking or tobacco use
- Hormonal changes (puberty, pregnancy, menopause)
- Poor diet and nutrition
- Medicines Affecting Oral Health
- Chronic diseases (diabetes, HIV, cancer)
Prevention of Gingivitis
Preventing gingivitis involves simple yet effective measures:
- Use proper techniques to brush your teeth, gums, and tongue at least twice daily.
- Floss daily, especially before bedtime.
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and replace it every three months.
- Use fluoride toothpaste.
- Minimise snacking, particularly after brushing your teeth at night.
- Chew sugar-free gum, rinse, or drink water after snacks.
- Use an effective mouthwash as recommended by your dentist.
- Visit your Seven Hills dentist for regular check-ups and cleanings.
- Avoid sugary foods, tobacco, and excessive alcohol.
- Consider additional risk factors like age, smoking, diet, and genetics.
If you notice any symptoms of gingivitis, it’s essential to seek professional help immediately.
If treatment is received early, the illness can be stopped from developing into periodontitis.
Gum health depends on regular dental check-ups, good oral hygiene, and a balanced lifestyle.
