The First Dental Visit: When should I bring my child and how often?

We recommend that children as young as 2.5 years of age can be brought in for their first dental check up to ensure that all the baby teeth are growing correctly and are healthy.

We also recommend coming for regular check up and cleans every 6 months to monitor progress and changes.

Why should I bring my child from a young age?

It is important to start young because baby teeth matter as much as the adult teeth.  A child has 20 baby teeth and they are all out by the age of 2.5-3 years old.

The baby teeth can stay in the mouth up to the age of 12 years old and premature loss of baby teeth can cause crowding and spacing issues for the adult teeth.  So it is important to have regular check up, scales and cleans to ensure your child's teeth and bones are healthy and developing properly.

We believe in a wholistic approach to dentistry meaning we don't just want to care about their teeth and mouth, but also your child's overal health and wellbeing.

What happens at the dental appointment for my child?

The first appointment will generally just involve an examination of the teeth, gums, and tongue. Depending on their age, subsequent appointments may involve scales and cleans and fluoride treatment. In circumstances where we find cavities and tooth decay, we will inform you and advise on the appropriate type and approach to treatment.

We want to provide you with a thorough understanding of your child's dental health and inform you of any issues that may require treatment.

Looking after your child's teeth - Oral Hygiene Tips

It is important to develop good habits from a young age. We have some recommended oral hygiene tips

  • Brushing: Everyone of all ages should brush 2 times a day for 2minutes each time

  • Spitting: It is important to encourage your child to spit the toothpaste out because swallowing too much fluoride at a young age can affect the development of the teeth

  • No food after brushing: Don't eat anything after brushing at night. Only allow water

  • Ages 0-3: Use a small hand towel or baby toothbrush to clean the teeth twice a day without toothpaste. Do not give your baby/toddler a bottle to sleep with

  • Ages 4-6: Use a children's toothbrush with children's toothpaste (low strength flouride usually about 400ppm). Supervise your child's brushing at night

  • Ages 7-12: Use a children's toothbrush and you can start using adult toothpaste. Teach and practice flossing once or twice a week

  • Ages 13-17: Use adults toothbrushes and toothpastes. Floss every day
