WHICH OPTION IS BEST FOR ME?

Many people are interested in whiter teeth. The best way to tell if your teeth are suited for any kind of whitening treatment is to talk to us. We will talk to you about the causes of the issue, and help you make an informed decision about which treatment option may work best.  What we want to do is help you to understand:

  • What causes teeth staining?

  • What whitening options are available?

  • What do I need to understand about whitening treatments?

What causes stained or discoloured teeth?

Most causes of tooth stains are from an external source, rather than from within the tooth itself.  Much of this comes from your diet and lifestyle habits. E.g

  • coffee, tea, red wine, fizzy drinks

  • eating foods high in colouring like soups, curries and pasta sauces

  • smoking or chewing tobacco

  • poor brushing and cleaning technique

Often the external causes of stains can be reduced by coming regularly for check up and cleans.  Having a habit of drinking water regularly after eating and drinking can also help to minimise external stains.

Other tooth stain causes are internal, which means the discolourisation comes from inside the tooth usually during the development and formation of the tooth or in some cases from a tooth with an unhealthy nerve.

What do I need to understand about whitening treatments?

Q: Is teeth whitening safe or dangerous?

A: Yes teeth whitening is safe when you are supervised and instructed by a professionally trained dentist who understands your teeth and your health. A question I would ask in return - “Is a sharp knife safe?” - In the hands of a trained chef, of course it is. But if you gave it to someone who isn’t trained or inexperienced with knives, then it can be quite harmful. Likewise, with teeth whitening. It’s safe in the hands of a professional.

Q: How long does teeth whitening last?

A: The results of whitening procedures will largely depend on your lifestyle and diet, but may last up to 1-2 years. Lifestyle and diets which cause staining more rapidly include poor oral hygiene habits (brushing/flossing), smoking, lack of drinking water, wine, coffee, tea, cordials, etc.

Q: Can teeth whitening cause sensitive teeth or sensitive gums?

A: Sensitivity on the gums and teeth can be a common occurrence during and even after whitening procedures. The symptoms generally go away quite quickly or within a few days and our job as trained professionals is to advise our patients carefully on how to minimise these issues.

To maximise your teeth whitening treatment, the following should be avoided:

  • Avoid consuming foods and drinks that can stain your teeth e.g. If it could stain a white T-shirt, then it’s best to avoid it

  • Avoid red wine and instead, select a refreshing Semillon or other white wine

  • Don’t use coloured mouthwash and toothpaste

  • Avoid soft drinks that are red, orange, purple, pink, blue or any other bold colour

  • Avoid brightly coloured fruit drinks and cordials

  • Stop consuming tobacco products of any kind
